Apart from 18 months in Germany, Dave has worked at ATL since he left university, initially as a scientist/network engineer, then a hardware engineer, then a software developer - now, Dave holds the position of Principal Engineer. Being a Principal Engineer at Allied Telesis involves acting as the technical leader of a team of engineers working in an area of specialisation. In Dave's case, this area is device drivers and the low-level system software that operates hardware subsystems. Dave is responsible for the quality of the code delivered by these software engineers.
"I've been here for many years now, possibly as many as 25, and I appreciate working with interesting and friendly colleagues, the comfortable working environment with flexible working hours, as well as the terrific swimming pool and gym. I enjoy the mental challenges of working with complex hardware and software systems, there's never a dull moment! Plus there is the opportunity to spend a day on community service. I was able to spend my day pursuing the sort of environmental work I like to be involved with.
"I prefer to live in the South Island because of the tramping opportunities it provides and I like Christchurch because of its excellent programme of orchestral and chamber music concerts and opera performances. Christchurch is a well-endowed city with a first class library and international film festival. I also enjoy the variety provided by well-defined seasons and a topography that suits cycle commuting."
